Sixth Form 16-19 Tuition Fund

The 16 to 19 tuition fund 2023 to 2024 academic year

The 16 to 19 tuition fund is specifically allocated funding for all 16 to 19 institutions who receive annual funding allocations from ESFA for the provision of 16 to 19 education, to mitigate the disruption to learning due to COVID-19. The funding is available to all 16 to 19 institutions. This fund is targeted at students in most need, offering small group tuition to recover lost learning.

The guidance related to the fund means that it can be used to support:

  • Students who have not achieved a grade 6 in GCSE English and/or GCSE maths at age 16 and would need catch-up support.
  • Students who are economically disadvantaged who meet the 16 to 19 Bursary Fund eligibility criteria and would need catch-up support to reach their full potential, even where their prior attainment is high.
  • Students aged 19 to 24 who have an education, health and care (EHC) plan.

When identifying who needs support through the tuition fund, students who have achieved a grade 4 in GCSE maths and/or English and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) will be prioritised in the first instance.

The fund will support students that meet eligibility requirements in:

  • small groups and one to one tuition
  • tuition in English, maths/other academic subjects
  • tuition in non-academic subjects, such as exam preparation
  • tuition in vocational courses

The need for support will be determined and agreed between the eligible learners and staff. Tuition will take place in small groups. Small groups are defined as up to 5 students, in exceptional circumstances this may be extended to up to 7 students.

Considerations

When identifying who needs support through the tuition fund on the basis of low prior attainment, Waingels will prioritise tuition for those students who have not achieved a grade 4 in maths and/or English and those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the first instance.

When identifying who needs support from the tuition fund on the basis of economic disadvantage, Waingels will have regard for the individual needs of students, for example, providing tuition to assist high achieving disadvantaged students to reach their full potential, in addition to supporting other students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

With regards to relevant support structure and chosen activity, Waingels will consider what will be most effective for their eligible students, considering students’ needs.

Resourcing the support could be through payment of existing staff in the delivery of sessions beyond curriculum time, hiring new staff, or buying in a service from a third-party provider. Waingels intends to prioritise the use of our own staff in the first instance but will also make use of quality third-party tutor provision where required.

We intend to provide small group and 1-1 tuition for students meeting the criteria as outlined in our considerations.
