Open Evening Success

On Thursday the 3rd of October, the Waingels Open Evening was held from 5-8 pm for the Year 6s who will be making the exciting yet nervewracking leap from primary school to secondary school next year.

The event is the perfect occasion for Waingels to showcase the hard work of its staff and students, as well as to proudly present the opportunities, options, and activities available for the students making that transition to be able to feel supported and enhance their experience at Waingels. A total of 430 students.

took part in helping out across various departments - whether it was assisting as Tour Guides or Department Helpers within subject areas. Overall, the event was a massive success, with many visitors expressing how satisfied and impressed they were with the responsibility and politeness of the students, engaging attitude of the staff and the facilities that the school provides.

Ollie in Year 7 has written an article about his first experience of Open Evening and what it was like to stand up in Mrs Humber's Headteacher talk to deliver a speech: Hi, My Name is Ollie and I am a Year 7 student. On Friday the 20th September 2024 I saw there were auditions for open evening speeches. I was very interested in it so I went to Y017 to try out with some other Year 7s. Mrs Crang gave us a script to read out. I partnered up with one of my friends to do the auditions. At the end of the auditions Mrs Crang told us we would soon find out in PD time who got through and who would be reading the speeches for Open Evening. When my Tutor told us who got it, I was nervous to find out but pleased as I was the only boy and I would be joined by three other Year 7s.

Then a few weeks later we had rehearsals where we were on stage practising our final script. Our last rehearsal was on the day of Open Evening. I was really nervous about the night but I persevered. We did three speeches across the night. At the end of the last speech we got our Headteacher award Badges From Mrs Humber. I was really proud of myself and felt so responsible. I was also very proud of everyone who auditioned and got on to do the speeches. Thank you for taking your time to read my article. Photographs from this event can be viewed here.
