World Book Day Celebrations

On the 2nd March, World Book Day, Waingels looked like a very different school. With the staff keen to show off their love of reading, members of staff donned costumes, face paint and wigs to show the students some of our favourite characters. Roaming the corridors and courtyards were the Twits, Alice in Wonderland, the Tiger who came to Tea, Effie Trinket, the Mad Hatter, Harry Potter and many more, and we were delighted with the eclectic mixture of characters represented. The students, at first, were a little confused, but it was lovely to see them engaging in guessing who staff were dressed as. It was a wonderful, booky celebration!

Following on from the fancy-dress fun, the English department invited students from Addington School to celebrate with some of our Year 7s in a ‘book breakfast’. Over fruit and croissants, the students shared parts from their favourite books, and discussed what makes a story exciting. Led by our Year 9 English Ambassadors, the students took part in a writing workshop, where they created stories from unusual objects as inspiration. We had stories about chicken racing, laser eyes, being stuck in a bubble and the dangers of love potions! Our friends at Addington and our students agreed, it was a lovely way to celebrate the power of stories.
